Types and types of exams

With the successful bachelor's or master's thesis, the student proves that he is able to independently write a scientific paper under the supervision of a university professor after completing the course. The workload for writing a bachelor thesis (ECTS: 6-12) is based on the framework, but is generally comparatively smaller than a master's thesis (ECTS: 15-30) in a subsequent master’s course for reasons of time alone.

The subject of e-exams has been given increasing importance since the Bologna reform. It is hoped that computer-assisted exams will save time in the long term when creating exams and make the evaluation much easier. The development phases of e-learning with regard to the structuring of the learning content as well as the task / exercise types have shifted from strong control through closed task types (multiple choice, right / wrong, drag & drop) to limited control options through open task types (case studies, portfolios , Problem-solving tasks).

The cross-faculty blended learning project of the JMU "CaseTrain" offers services for the implementation of purely electronic exams (on the computer) as well as electronically supported multiple choice paper exams.

An essay is a short essay in which a limited topic is discussed freely and in an overview. It is more about the development of a guiding principle or a still preliminary idea than the stringent presentation of complex content. Although the style of the essay is more journalistic than scientific, it must of course be objective in terms of content and identify the sources of quotes or suggestions. The essay is particularly useful for personal knowledge control and repetition, as it allows one to translate what has been heard or read in a relatively informal manner into a written form. The required length is usually around five pages.

The term paper is one of the most common forms of examination. On approx. 20 to 25 pages, a limited topic suitable for the respective event is processed according to scientific criteria. For a successful term paper, your own research, literature review and selection as well as excerpts are necessary. The aim is to build a scientific argument based on a key question, which can be supported by references. At the end there is usually an answer to the key question and a description of the newly arisen problems or questions. The special value of housework results from the intensive preoccupation with a topic. (Technical, methodological and personal skills)

In contrast to protocols, learning diaries are not about simply reproducing the contents of seminars or lectures. Rather, just like in a diary, students should pick up on and reflect on the points that are most important to them. This type of examination also offers candidates the opportunity to evaluate the course, express problems of understanding and record their own learning successes.

An exam serves as a more or less standardized query of basic knowledge, which is why it is mainly used in the basic courses. It is important to answer either openly formulated questions in essay form or closed questions as part of a multiple-choice test within the time frame specified in the examination regulations. The lecturers are responsible for the exact design and degree of difficulty. In some cases, a number of questions are asked to choose from in the exam. Whether and which aids are permitted will be announced before the exam. (+ Fah-, methodological competence)

Through project work and presentations, students should demonstrate their ability to work in a team and, in particular, to develop, implement and present concepts. They should show that they can define their own goals for a larger task and work out interdisciplinary approaches and concepts. If the work takes place as group work, the contribution of the individual must be clearly recognizable and assessable.

In one Seminar protocol the crucial content points of a session are summarized. It should be written in such a way that someone who was not present at the meeting is informed of all central statements and contexts. To do this, the content must be restructured, secondary literature incorporated and any ambiguities resolved. Basic literature is provided for each session in the form of a selection bibliography on the topic under discussion. It is not enough to summarize the PowerPoint slides provided for a course. In many cases, performance in the experimental courses is also checked by writing Experimental protocols, in which the process and the result of the experiments are presented. The exercise can support a lecture as a course. Often, exercises are solved in an exercise, the solution of which is a prerequisite for participating in the written examination of the lecture. The exercise can also take place in the form of a tutorial or sometimes independently of the lecture, similar to a seminar. Some exercises are divided into group and homework. The tasks of the group exercise are designed as face-to-face events and invite you to find solutions together. The homework, on the other hand, is done alone.
