This does not happen that infrequently, but should be avoided at all costs - to protect your own health. Our article deals intensively with how mold develops in bed, what measures can help against it and how you can specifically prevent an infestation.

Causes of mold on the mattress

The main cause of a moldy sleeping mat is of course moisture, which is more present in the bedroom than in other rooms. Every night people sweat out a lot of fluid, more precisely up to half a liter. He gives this to the mattress. If there is a lack of breathability, the moisture cannot be transported to the outside air. This creates a warm, humid climate that sooner or later consequently leads to the formation of mold.

The risk of mold is particularly high if there is a water-repellent pad under the mattress instead of a slatted frame. In this case, no air gets to the underside of the mattress - this is where mold spores tend to nestle. Thus, the infestation usually occurs below, not above.

In addition to the internal moisture and warmth described above, condensation water favors moldy mattresses. By sweating and breathing, the person automatically directs fluids into the room. Now bedrooms are generally heated less so that these liquids condense on surfaces. The resulting moisture seeps into the sleeping pad.

In the bedroom there is often a humidity of over 65 percent - a value that stimulates mold spores to multiply and spread. They can easily get onto the sleeping pad through the air in the room, where they form unsightly foxing spots over time. In the vicinity of these spots, the concentration of mold spores is extremely high, so the mold continues to spread.

Detect mold growth

You can recognize an incipient mold infestation by mold stains. These are initially reminiscent of dried water stains, but have a very dark edge, which indicates relatively clearly that the mold is on the advance. As soon as the mold stains take on a brownish or even greenish color, you can be sure that mold is spreading on the mattress. A musty smell also suggests this.

Remove any mold

In contrast to countless posts on the Internet, we advise against trying to remove mold from the mattress with home remedies. If there is a small amount of mold, you can use chemical cleaners from specialist retailers - use chlorine-free products. If several areas are infested or if there is extensive infestation, you should first consider whether professional cleaning, which is usually very expensive, would be worthwhile. This is usually only the case with particularly high-quality models. Otherwise, you'd better get yourself a new mattress right away.

  • You reduce the humidity by ventilating the room.
  • All mattress types need to be turned and turned regularly. We recommend turning the corner every two weeks. Turning is enough quarterly or every six months - depending on the level of breathability.
  • Washable mattress covers should be cleaned regularly. Simply place them at an angle against a wall in order to brush them off and / or vacuum them off. Again, remember to turn the mattress - that is, work from both sides. At the same time, it is properly ventilated.
  • Simple but effective: wash or change your bed linen every week if possible.

Choice of mattress type

The elementary measures apply to all types of mattresses that exist. However, the considerable effort of active mold prevention can be kept within limits with a sleeping mat that is less prone to being attacked by mold.

We advise you to use breathable mattresses when buying a new one. It is true that manufacturers nowadays take care to ensure this property for every type of mattress; however, it is more pronounced in some genera than in others.

Spring mattresses have a particularly high air circulation. The special design with horizontally and vertically arranged air ducts alone ensures this. Every movement that you perform while you sleep leads to a stream of air that practically pulls the moisture away and thus removes it from the innerspring mattress. Those who tend to sweat profusely at night should opt for this type of model when in doubt.

Alternatively, high-quality cold foam mattresses are also possible. These have a relatively open-pored interior, which in turn enables solid air circulation. The same applies to latex mattresses, which are primarily made of natural latex, while models in which the synthetic latex content dominates tend to have a closed cell structure that is more heat-storing than climate-regulating.

Use underbeds and mattress pads (toppers)

Regardless of which type of mattress you ultimately prefer, you can prevent mold formation with an underbed and, above all, a suitable mattress topper. A topper acts as an efficient moisture protection and mattress protector. It prevents the moisture from penetrating the sleeping surface at all.

It is important that the mattress topper and, if applicable, the lower bed are also made of breathable materials - for example cold or viscose foam. In addition, the protective elements should be machine washable at high temperatures - ideally at at least 60, better still up to 95 degrees Celsius.

Conclusion: avoid mold and sleep well

Mold on the mattress poses an immense health risk. The spores on the sleeping mat get into the respiratory organs much faster via the air we breathe, so there is a high risk of becoming chronically ill. With that in mind, you should do everything in your power to keep mold out of your bed. Daily ventilation for sufficient air circulation should be a matter of course. In addition, by using a breathable mattress type and by using the underbed and topper as moisture protection, you can ensure optimal conditions for a literally healthy, restful sleep.
