Art and culture: communication bridges and connecting instruments between peoples and people

In 2018, Austria and Albania realized a joint cultural year under the motto “New discovery together”. A total of 103 events and projects in music, literature, film, photography, visual arts, dance, theater, media, history, archeology and intercultural dialogue were implemented. The year of culture enabled Austria and Albania to significantly intensify their cultural and scientific relationships. Both the Austrian and the Albanian side drew an extremely positive balance.

As part of the Austria-Albania Year of Culture 2018, a focus was placed on the close cultural and scientific cooperation between the two countries. The aim was to strengthen Austrian and Albanian cultural ties and to intensify intercultural exchange. The ties between Austria and Albania were brought closer to a public interested in culture and resulted in new impulses for creative ideas and sustainable cooperation.

In keeping with the motto “New discovery together”, the focus was not only on historical connecting points between Austria and Albania, but above all on the current friendship between the two countries. Against this background, primarily contemporary art, culture and innovations by young artists and scientists from Austria and Albania were increasingly promoted and presented.

The program comprised a wide range of different events in the fields of history, literature, visual arts, film, music, media, science and intercultural dialogue. The year of culture was officially opened on November 19, 2017 on the occasion of the 105th national holiday of Albania. The concert took place in the Wiener Konzerthaus under the name "Vienna Salutes Tirana" and with the participation of prominent Austrian and Albanian artists.

A special highlight of the cultural year was the book “Common New Discovery - A Kaleidoscope on the Past and Present of Austrian-Albanian Relations”. The book was published in both German and Albanian and was ceremoniously presented in Vienna and Tirana.

In the area of ​​film presentation, the advance presentation of the film "Albania - A Land on the Move" took place in Vienna on November 27, 2018. The film was broadcast on the ORF2 cultural program “matinee” and on ORFIII.

The interreligious conference "Albania a Model of Interfaith Harmony for Europe?" Was another highlight event that took place on May 3rd in Tirana. The conference focused on interreligious coexistence, harmony and dialogue and their historical, philosophical and theological backgrounds. At the end of the conference, a declaration was signed by representatives of the religious communities on future common dialogue formats.

The MUSIC-FILM TIRANA FESTIVAL took place for the first time from September 13th to 20th, 2018. For one week, Austrian and Albanian music films and live concerts were shown every evening at the New Bazaar in Tirana.

The cultural year Austria-Albania 2018 was ceremoniously ended on December 28, 2018 with a gala evening in the Congress Palace in Tirana. Under the motto “Alles Walzer”, 120 artists from the Albanian National Opera performed under the direction of the Austrian conductor Claudio Büchner and the former artistic director and choreographer of the Vienna State Opera Ballet, Renato Zanella.

In Austria a total of 33 events were organized in eight different cities; In Albania, 70 events were held in ten different cities. The main thematic focus in both countries was on music, literature and film.
