Caroline of Monaco - No luck with marriage

Status: 02.03.2017 11:15 a.m.

The American mother, film diva Grace Kelly, brought glamor and the attention of the whole world to the small, until then little-noticed principality of Monaco when she married the Monegasque prince in 1956. And so begins the life of Princess Caroline Louise Marguerite Grimaldi, first child of Gracia Patricia (1929 to 1982) and Rainier III. (1923 to 2005) on January 23, 1957 under the eyes of the world public. The Princely House announces the birth with gunfire. She and her siblings Albert (born 1958) and Stéphanie (born 1965) are still being watched by the international press.

Early marriage to Philippe Junot

Princess Caroline first attended the "Dames de St. Maur" school in Monaco, and then passed a high school diploma in both England and France. From 1977 onwards, the young woman studied four major subjects at the famous Sorbonne in Paris - politics, philosophy, biology and psychology - without, however, obtaining a degree. She is best known on the boulevard for her various romances and her life as part of the international jet set. Just one year after starting her studies, the 21-year-old married, against all expectations and the will of her father, in 1978 the French industrialist Philippe Junot, who was dubbed Playboy by the press. Two years later, the relationship with the 17-year-old man broke down and the couple divorced in October 1980. This, her first marriage, remained childless and was even canceled ten years later by Pope John Paul II at her instigation.

Tragic death of Gracia Patricia

Caroline and her beloved mother were often out together, making Paris unsafe.

On September 14, 1982, her mother Gracia Patricia died in a traffic accident. Meanwhile, Caroline's little sister Stéphanie is also sitting in the car, but survives the accident. After this first difficult stroke of fate in her life, Princess Caroline, as the eldest daughter of the Monegasque prince, has to take on the role of mother of the country. In addition to her representative duties, she is, for example, president of the "Princess Gracia Foundation", which supports local artisans, and of the "Garden Club", which is dedicated to arranging flowers and gardening, among other things.

Loss of second husband Stefano Casiraghi

Caroline with her great love Stefano Casiraghi and their three children.

On December 29, 1983, Princess Caroline marries - again without Prince Rainier's blessing - the Italian entrepreneur Stefano Casiraghi. Since her first marriage has not yet been declared invalid by the Catholic Church at this point in time, Caroline's second marriage can only be performed as a civil ceremony. It is said that Casiraghi was her great love. With him, the princess has three children: Andrea Albert Pierre (born June 8, 1984), Charlotte Marie Pomeline (born August 3, 1986) and Pierre Rainier Stefano (born September 5, 1987). But fate doesn't mean it well with Caroline: On October 3, 1990, Casiraghi was killed in an accident during the racing boat world championships off the coast of Monaco.

Various lawsuits against media reports

The royal lifestyle of the Grimaldis and the tragedies of the family make Caroline's private life a coveted commodity in the international tabloid media. Since the beginning of the 90s, the princess has been fighting back vehemently and happily. With success: in 1996, for example, the Hamburg Higher Regional Court sentenced Burda-Verlag to a payment of 180,000 marks, the highest compensation for pain and suffering in the history of the German press. The reason is an interview published in 1992 with her and the magazine "Bunte", which was, however, fictitious. Other processes that Caroline would like to use to protect her privacy follow. In 2003 she even brought a lawsuit before the European Court of Human Rights, which a year later agreed to a spectacular verdict. The German press sees its freedom hindered by the so-called Caroline judgment.

Marriage to Ernst August Prince of Hanover

Marital happiness does not last: Caroline with Ernst August and daughter Alexandra.

Caroline's third husband, Ernst August, is similarly contentious - with his full name: Ernst August Albert Paul Otto Rupprecht Oskar Berthold Friedrich-Ferdinand Christian-Ludwig Prince of Hanover and Duke of Braunschweig and Lüneburg, head of the noble family of the Guelphs. On January 23, 1999, the 42nd birthday of the Monegasque princess, Prince Rainier III. the public about his daughter's wedding. Caroline marries into the European aristocracy and now appears as "Royal Highness". Caroline has another daughter in Ernst August: Alexandra Charlotte Ulrike Maryam Virginia is born on July 20, 1999.

At the beginning of 2010, the Prince Wife Caroline testified in favor of her husband at the Hildesheim Regional Court, where he was responsible for alleged bodily harm in Kenya in 2000.

Shortly before, pictures of her husband were published in the media, showing him kissing another woman on vacation in Thailand. Rumors of an alleged marriage crisis and breakup are making the rounds. The Grimaldis and the Guelphs remain silent about their relationship status to this day.

Proud grandmother of four

Caroline has more luck with her children than in their marriages: Her eldest son Andrea has been married to Tatiana Santo Domingo from Colombia since 2013 and has already given her two grandchildren. Daughter Charlotte also became a mother for the first time in 2013. In 2015, their youngest son Pierre tied the knot to his wife Beatrice Borromeo in a dream wedding on Lake Maggiore. In 2017 the two have their first child, a son. Little baby Princess Alexandra of Hanover makes her mother proud as a figure skater at international competitions.
