Counts college as an experience
USA Sports Scholarship FAQ
What do I have to imagine under a sports scholarship?
Scholarships (including academic grants) are much more widespread in the USA than, for example, in Germany. Sports scholarships are awarded to athletes with outstanding athletic performance to enable them to study in the United States at low cost. The athletes train together in the college team and represent their university in competitions. The coaches are often only there for the professional support of the teams and individual athletes, have a very respected position at the US universities and are accordingly well paid.
Why are scholarships awarded?
American universities have always had sports teams in a number of sports. These sports teams are managed and trained by employed coaches and are the figureheads of the respective universities in the permanent comparative battles between the universities. If a sports team is regionally or even nationally successful, the media follow it. In this respect, the sports teams also serve as a marketing tool for universities to recruit new students. For this reason, the universities also provide the coaches with a budget to recruit talented athletes from home and abroad, which the coaches make available to the team members so that they can (fully or partially) cover the tuition fees and living costs.
What can I study with a sports scholarship?
You can study almost any subject if your university offers it, as the scholarship only regulates the financing of your studies - it is completely independent of your choice of study. You enroll as a "normal" student at the university in your desired subject area. In the USA there is a much larger selection of subject areas and subject areas. Your sports scholarship is completely independent of your desired course of study, as the sports scholarship only regulates the financing of your studies. You can therefore choose any combination of subjects that is offered at the university.
Where will I be staying if I am studying with a sports scholarship?
Like all other athletes on campus, you will be accommodated in a student dormitory. Sometimes there are even special sports residences where only the athletes live - but this depends on the university in question. Under certain circumstances you can also live in a kind of shared apartment outside the campus, but usually only from the 3rd semester onwards.
How do I take care of myself?
As a rule, you will receive a kind of "cafeteria card" with which you can go to the university cafeterias or canteens every day.
How does such a degree count here in Germany?
Of course, there is no general answer to this. However, since the Bologna Agreement means that only bachelor's or master's degrees will be offered in Germany until 2010, the US bachelor's degree is a good choice. The recognition of bachelor's degrees is already regulated throughout Europe; internationally there is still a need for coordination between the universities. At most European (German) universities, you can already enroll for a master’s degree with a US Bachelor’s degree. But one thing is very clear: the more international a company is, the higher the bachelor's degree obtained abroad will count. The USA is internationally known for its good higher education system, so a degree is highly regarded worldwide.
What are the requirements for such a degree?
The basic requirements for studying with a sports scholarship are the same as for studying without a sports scholarship. In order to be able to start a full degree in the USA, at least a technical high school diploma, better a high school diploma, is required, as this is regarded as the equivalent of a 12-year high school diploma. If you are already a student at a university, enrollment is also possible, usually with generous recognition of the academic achievements achieved up to that point. In these cases, however, there are some complicated rules regarding the age limits and playing eligibility for the sports scholarships, which must be checked individually.
At which universities is a sports scholarship possible?
Sports scholarships are offered at community colleges, colleges, and universities. The mediation of sports scholarships refers to the approx. 2000 colleges and universities of the USA.

Baseball, basketball, cross country, fencing, football, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing (cross country and downhill), soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track & field (indoor and outdoor), volleyball, water Polo, wrestling.
For other sports there is currently no (!) Possibility of a scholarship, as these are currently not competitive sports in the NCAA or NAIA. In some of the sports mentioned above, there are hardly any scholarships for international students, in others foreigners have good opportunities.
What is the level of play at the colleges and which leagues are there?
American universities play in different divisions of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and NAIA (National Association of Intercollegeiate Athletics), which differ mainly in the size of the universities. The NCAA I is the largest and strongest division, the NCAA II and the NAIA are roughly comparable and somewhat "weaker". In contrast to all other divisions, the universities in NCAA III do not award sports scholarships, but usually have "coached" teams. It is important to note that e.g. the top teams of the NCAA II or NAIA are stronger and more professional than the more average and weaker teams of the NCAA I. You always have to see in each individual case where the best opportunities are available!
How can you imagine the training?
US college sports are ideal for those who not only want to study abroad academically with the help of a sports scholarship, but also want to develop further in sports. The training is very intensive and usually consists of at least 2.5 hours of daily training under the supervision of trained coaches including assistant coaches. The training units usually take place in the afternoon from around 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., after the class and, if necessary, before the evening class.
In addition, there are regular strength training and running units until late in the evening or early in the morning. Anyone who thinks that they don't have to do anything as a permanent team member is absolutely out of place. The training is generally tough and pretty professional. It is not for nothing that there are many students who pursue a professional career after up to 4 years of sport at the universities.

How much can a scholarship be?
In general, you can get a 100% scholarship from a coach. This means that the tuition fees as well as the costs for accommodation on campus (including ancillary costs) and meals are covered 100% by the coach and thus the university. The university will not give you any money, it will only reimburse you for tuition fees, room and board. However, these full scholarships are rather rare (especially for men) and are only awarded to top athletes. Usually there is an own share for rent and food, which you would also pay in Germany. Normally, scholarships cover 30-100% of all costs incurred, i.e. tuition fees, meals and accommodation.
Do I have any other costs in the US?
Yes, you are responsible for the costs of pocket money, flights, trips to the surrounding area, international insurance and books. However, these are usually manageable.
For how long is a sports scholarship awarded?
Sports scholarships are initially valid for one year, but are usually extended until graduation if the athlete roughly maintains his level of performance and is also eligible to play in the league. The maximum period of study with a sports scholarship is 4 years if you are starting your studies as a freshman. This corresponds to the time for an entire undergraduate degree up to and including a bachelor's degree. If you are already a student and switch to a US university with a sports scholarship after a few semesters, other rules may apply that can shorten your eligibility period. We consider these cases individually and advise accordingly.
Can I lose my scholarship too?
You do not immediately lose your scholarship due to poor athletic performance or bad luck with injuries; you may at most reduce it. But this is rather unusual. You can lose your scholarship if, for example, you cheat on exams, you fail your courses, you behave unfairly in sports, you do not follow the campus rules (alcohol, drugs ...) etc.
What does the "NCAA / NAIA clearinghouse" mean?
The NCAA and NAIA (since August 2010) have their own "Initial Eligibility Clearinghouse", which is responsible for issuing the start / play permit. In order to be allowed to play in NCAA I and II, registration / approval is mandatory there. The clearinghouse / eligibility center uses your SAT results and your academic performance to calculate whether you will be granted a license to play. In addition, they clarify whether you are an amateur according to the American understanding. Registration currently costs US $ 130 (NCAA) or US $ 120 (NAIA). The clearinghouse also clarifies questions about your eligibility period and is generally the last resort for questions about your eligibility.
What is the SAT test?
The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a combined language and math test that is required for the player license or registration with the NCAA clearinghouse. Further information can be found on our USA main page under Info Library / Application.
