What is the publication of a thesis

Publish scientific work: Beware of exploitation!

In contrast to dissertations, there is a publication right and no publication obligation for bachelor, master or diploma theses in Germany. Very few theses are ever published. After the statutory retention period at the university has expired, the scientific work will be destroyed.

Make money on your thesis

With the completion of your thesis, you acquire the sole copyright in the sense of intellectual property and thus also the rights of use in reproduction, distribution, publication and making available to the public. So there is nothing more obvious than wanting to convert your intellectual work into face value: After all, you have taken a lot of time and worked on a topic scientifically!

Attention: If you wrote your thesis in collaboration with a company, you must obtain the company's written consent before publication.

Search for a publisher for scientific work

If you decide to publish, you have to look for a publisher. Several publishers have specialized in the publication of scientific papers.

But there are also black sheep. Quite a few publishers will contact you directly: They research the university libraries for new titles and then contact you via Xing or Facebook. However, you will usually only receive fees if a minimum number of copies of your work are sold within a certain period of time. As a rule, you hardly lose more than 30 euros per year for such offers - if at all.

Personal appointment protects against black sheep

The following applies: Always approach publishers yourself and make sure to ask for a personal appointment. Most important questions: What production costs do you incur? What does the fee structure look like? How long are you tied to the publisher and what are the restrictions on your sole copyright? You should always have contracts checked by a lawyer before they are signed!
