Overwatch remains one of the most popular competitive games ever after almost five years on the market. While many eyes are currently on the development of Overwatch 2, it has become clear that we won't get our hands on it this year.

In the meantime, players get by with what the current game has to offer. Thankfully, Overwatch is in great shape right now. While the game hasn't had a new hero since Echo was released last April, constant changes to the balance have kept the game fresh. It also has one of the most exciting and interesting metas ever, with tons of devastating heroes to choose from.

But which ones thrive? Who should you play if you want to be competitive and farm SR? If you are a new or expired player, there is a lot of catching up to do and a lot of information to analyze. Wrecking ball

Wrecking Ball has been going strong for several months. A lot of the main tanks are having a bit of trouble right now, but despite nerfs, the Overwatch community seems to have really understood how to dominate with the hamster. He's one of the heroes the current meta is about.

He is the most selected of the grandmaster rank, and it is not difficult to see why. If a tank's job is to make room, Hammond is undisputed. Its ability to displace and disrupt the enemy's front and backline is unmatched. Despite a recent nerf on his boop strength, he's still devastating any team trying to establish his position.

The only real downside is that he's a character who only gets really great over time. He lives from specific rollouts and map knowledge. Plus, the line between feeding your brain and tearing a team apart can be very thin. However, if you know your way around the little guy, there are few, if any, characters as powerful as him.

Zarya

Zarya is currently the off-tank of choice in the high-level game. Your synergy with Wrecking Ball is very powerful. Like Winston / Zarya matings in the past, she can gush the hamster in the air upon entering and receives a free fee while protecting the advance from any crowd control.

Graviton Surge also remains one of the most powerful ultimatums in the game, combining with several powerful skills that your team is likely to offer. Combining it with Tracer's Pulse Bomb or Wrecking Balls Minefield wins a team fight in most cases. These don't require good coordination either, so it should be perfect in games with minimal communication.

Zarya also offers tremendous damage when fully charged, and with so many dives in the current meta, it's not too difficult to maintain. When Zarya is glowing, it will be hard to burn her down and stand from head to toe no matter who she faces.

Reinhardt and Winston are on the rise too, and she is known to be a good compliment to both of them. This makes them one of the most versatile top tier picks and certainly one of the best to climb on. She's good at almost anything the current meta will throw at her.

Tracer

If Tracer is strong in the meta, Overwatch is usually in a good place. As you can see, Overwatch is in a good place right now. Tracer's cooldowns are so common that in a high performing economy it is very important to be a nuisance. However, she can also turn into a killer at any time if an ability is wasted or a positional mistake is made.

Tracer thrives on aggressive mobile comps, and that's very popular right now. Their strength has remained somewhat constant, but heroes that empower them are also very strong right now. She can dive opponents with Wrecking Ball and clean up weak heroes, as well as coordinate with Zenyatta and his Discord Orb.

It is also self-sufficient, allowing healers and tanks to care more about protecting the front and backlines than about resources. The meta prefers chaotic disorientation right now, and this is one room Tracer likes to be in. If you can spot those moments when they are being created, your tracer will dominate the battlefield.

McCree

Zenyatta

Zen can easily fire shots by creating a discord on a target. This is a green light for all of these mobile heroes to dive and decimate an important enemy.

Elsewhere, the Omnic thrives because there are fewer shields in the game, making it easier to attach its orbs. This healing ball also finds tracers and wrecking balls, which are likely located deeper in an enemy's backline.

As always, Transcendence remains one of the strongest ultimatums in the game, especially with so many Zarya Graviton Surges.

The only real problem with Zen is its ability to really protect yourself. Outside of insane headshots, he will die if not properly protected. It has no mobility and will almost always be the main target of diving. This means you will likely need to coordinate with your team for protection. It is imperative to connect him to a support that can take care of him and allow him to jump off.

Mercy is Zenyatta's most common partner at the moment, although the main support role is much more evenly split between the characters.

However, Mercy is taking the cake for several important reasons. While it lacks the raw healing potential of other supports, it is consistent and, above all, difficult to pin down. Compared to most of the other supports, it is much more evasive and difficult to dive. Their ability to get away from an attack makes them difficult targets for a wrecking ball or tracer.

In addition, she is a good partner of Zenyatta. Mercy can increase his damage and also protect him from a dive with healing. It'll buy him time to hit his shots or help the rest of the team. Even if he falls, a resuscitation can undo a successful enemy dive.

In addition, she can plug in the hit scan or the 'primary damage dealer' in the team. She can literally float between roles in the team when needed. Literally.

Reinhardt

Reinhardt recently increased the pick rates. While its slower game may run counter to the mere pace of a wrecking ball, it also offers good counterplay. An aggressive Reinhardt can also take advantage of the weaker front line that a wrecking ball creates. If Reinhardt can get in, take a seat, and hit the opposing team before the ball successfully gains in value, the hamster doesn't have a lot of resources or support.

While a coordinated dive team is likely a little stronger, it's easy to gain value with Reinhardt right now, especially if you like to play aggressively. While it's a little early in his ascent to get him all the way to the top, Reinhardt could dissolve Ball's influence on the meta in a few months.

Sigma

Tier 2 isn't a great place for Sigma historically. The tank has been dominant for so long due to its deep kit that it falls out of favor in most compositions for performing below average. It does so after several violent nerfs focusing on the sheer amount of usefulness it has.

Ultimately, however, it is still sigma. He creates a pseudo frontline when Wrecking Ball is disturbing the team, he's doing very decent damage, his shield is more than versatile, and his Ultimate can win teamfights almost on his own.

He's certainly one of the more mechanically complicated tanks in the game, and a bad Sigma can throw games, but if you have a knack for him you can absolutely change the tide of a game.

echo

Echo has been and remains strong since her release. She can do tons of damage, she can fly, and she has one of the wildest Supers in the game. Your chances of causing harm are huge, especially when you throw a pocket mercy on them.

The real problem with Echo right now is that hitscans like Ashe, Widow, and McCree are strong. You have to play it carefully so that it is not bought in mid-flight. She is already a mechanically tougher heroine to master, and with her strong counterattacks rife right now, you'll need to choose your moment to soar in the sky.

However, their potential for damage is nearly unlimited due to the insane burning power of their focusing beam and shock options. If Echo is given an inch, perhaps more than anyone, it will take up the whole field. It's all about finding those inches.

shadow

Sombra is strong right now because of the meta-heroes. She is good on both defense and offense, and compliments most of the situations she is likely to find herself in. A good sombra is rare and wins games, but it's easier than ever to get on well with right now.

Sombra gets powerful when skill-based heroes dominate, which is very apt for the current meta. Since ball is so widespread, its strength should be obvious. While exceptional Hammond players find their way around Sombra, most are torn to pieces after being hacked. Since Zenyatta is activated by a secondary healer trying to break away from him, disabling this protection makes him much more vulnerable.

As always, Sombra is a difficult hero to master. What you lose in dealing with harm, you have to make amends with use and communication. More than any other hero, she requires you to speak to your team and coordinate the use of skills. If not, it can be difficult to find traction. However, if you get good at talking to your team, games can be tough to bear.

Widowmaker
