Should cleaning my piercings hurt
ADVERTISING | The best basic earring for a helix piercing? A Maria Tash Clicker because it closes neatly without a plug. In the London branch of the New York jewelry designer at Libertys, I once witnessed the new piercing hype. Here women of all nations, ages and social classes had small holes poked in their ears and adorned with gold and diamonds. I understood: You don't just wear thick clunkers on your finger, but on your ear. This noble ornament is called "ear curation".
That doesn't detract from the fact that exclusive jewelry stores like Maria Tash or New York Adorned are meticulous about cleanliness. I had to wait almost two hours for my piercer Peter, because there were five other women in front of me and not only the ear, but the plugs and rings have to be cleaned thoroughly before each prick.
And that's what matters when it comes to piercing. I had my first helix piercing (the helix is the bulge-like border of the auricle) "shot" on one of the ass cheeks in the department store with a pistol instead of a needle and only had to take the earring out a few days later. The hole had infected and the ring was pressing on a nerve end. It was unbearable.
I had the second helix piercing done at Classic Tattoo in Berlin - and was totally surprised at how professional my piercer was at the time. The result: a beautiful helix piercing on the left ear for which Flori gave me a small hoop with opals for my birthday. In London, I had the second helix piercing on the right and have been wearing my Maria Tash Clicker and this small creole (* affiliate link) with diamond since then without any problems.
These are my 5 tips for helix piercing:
1. Go to a professional piercer
You shouldn't make the mistake like me and save time and money like me. A piercing should be done well and if you don't go to a professional you risk an infection like me. In addition, a helix piercing hurts, after all, the needles pierce the cartilage tissue, unlike the soft earlobe ("lobe"). A good piercer won't let you see the needle and works quickly. By the way: the stinging hurts, but the first six to eight weeks after that are not without it. You should be prepared for that.
2. Pay attention to cleanliness
If the piercing studio or the piercer seems dingy to you in just one detail, I would run away. Because piercing is a ritual, especially when it comes to cleanliness. The couch has to be immaculately installed, the piercer has to change gloves for each customer, the needle and the earrings have to be cleaned and packaged sterile. In addition, you should be informed about the wound care of the puncture canal and, if necessary, be given a notepad.
3. Take time for counseling
Every ear is individual, so not every plug or ring works at the point where you imagined the piercing. This is an important point, especially for people who wear glasses, otherwise the bracket presses on the plug or irritates the wound healing process. With a helix piercing, it can take up to a year before it has healed painlessly and you can sleep in that ear again. Therefore, you should never have both ears pricked at the same time. I got my second piercing at the end of January and now at the beginning of March it still hurts if I accidentally touch the ring with a hairbrush while combing. Before piercing, the puncture and puncture points are marked with a pen. At this moment you should definitely look again in the mirror and put on your glasses for a test. In this context, the term “curated ear” is used, i.e. the optimal puncture sites and earrings are put together individually for you.
4. Take follow-up care seriously
First of all, you are not allowed to go to the swimming pool or the sauna for six weeks. Therefore, in my opinion, it is advisable to do a helix piercing before summer or a wellness vacation. The appointment should not take place in the coldest winter either, because you can hardly wear a hat with a fresh piercing because the cuff may press on the ear. I bought an antibacterial spray for cleaning (twice a day) from Maria Tash, which is based on salt water. In addition, I use a wound spray and cortisone cream if I have the feeling that the salt spray is not working well enough.
4. Do not fiddle with the piercing
Please leave your fingers out, even if it is seductive. Under no circumstances should you turn the earring back and forth, otherwise wound healing will be disturbed. If there is a small incrustation somewhere, you can carefully remove it with the spray and a Q-tip. Otherwise you should leave the piercing completely alone for the first few months.
5. Dare to mix styles
That's my personal opinion, but I think a mix of styles is cooler than matching all the earrings perfectly. At Maria Tash I therefore took a close look at how the salespeople and piercers combine their earrings. Now I wear diamonds, rose gold and white gold in a mix, although there are special studs and rings for cartilage piercings ("cartilage"). In any case, there is still room on my ear and as soon as the helix piercing on the right ear has healed completely, I want to have a hole pierced in my left earlobe and maybe make a "Daith" piercing.
Personally, for reasons of sustainability, I prefer not to wear costume jewelry anymore, but only real gold or silver-plated. It's an investment, but if you wear the jewelry like I do every day and use it to shower and do sports, then it's worth it.
