Between specialization and integration - perspectives in psychiatry and psychotherapy

Introduction

Psychiatry is in a rapidly advancing development process: New diagnostic possibilities and a growing understanding of the complex etiopathogenetic mechanisms of mental illnesses, therapeutic methods that have been tested for effectiveness, better tolerated and usable according to rational principles, patient-oriented treatment processes and care structures, better staffing and training, etc. Diagnosis and therapy are placed on a more solid basis and the healing prospects and social integration opportunities of many patients are decisively improved. Along with this development, the identity of the subject psychiatry and psychotherapy and the cooperating professions has grown. The public is better informed, but the social stigmatization and disadvantage of the mentally ill has not yet been overcome. This development harbors a multitude of challenges that the subject has to face if it is not to stagnate or even endanger what has been achieved - especially under the increasing pressure of limited economic resources. Against this background, the German Society for Psychiatry, Psychotherapy and Neurology (DGPPN) held its congress from September 17-21, 1996 in Düsseldorf under the general topic "In the field of tension between specialization and integration - perspectives in psychiatry, psychotherapy and neurology". The work gathered in this book is based on contributions to key topics at the Congress. The revised transcript of a public panel discussion with participants from health policy, science and practice on the development prospects of psychiatric-psychotherapeutic-psychosomatic care in Germany was also included. The volume is used to determine the current situation and to look into the future under scientific, clinical-practical, technical and care planning aspects.
